■ 줄거리
1980년 5월, 서울에서 평범한 택시를 운전하는 **김만섭(송강호)**는 밀린 월세를 갚기 위해 외국인 손님을 태우고 광주로 향한다. 그 손님은 독일 기자 **위르겐 힌츠페터(토마스 크레취만)**로, 그는 광주의 진실을 세상에 알리려 한다.
광주에 도착한 두 사람은 예상치 못한 광경을 목격한다. 시민들이 계엄군에게 무차별적인 폭력을 당하고 있으며, 언론은 이를 철저히 통제하고 있다. 만섭은 처음에는 돈만 받고 떠나려 하지만, 점점 광주 시민들의 처참한 현실을 목격하며 변화한다.
만섭은 힌츠페터가 촬영한 영상을 해외로 전달하기 위해 필사적으로 도망친다. 광주의 택시기사들과 시민들의 도움으로 간신히 서울로 돌아오고, 힌츠페터는 세상에 광주의 참상을 알린다. 그러나 만섭은 결국 힌츠페터와 재회하지 못한 채 다시 평범한 삶으로 돌아간다.
Synopsis
In May 1980, Kim Man-seob (Song Kang-ho), a struggling taxi driver in Seoul, takes a foreign passenger to Gwangju for a hefty fare. That passenger turns out to be Jürgen Hinzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann), a German journalist seeking to document the brutal government crackdown on democracy protesters.
Upon arriving, they witness shocking violence as soldiers attack unarmed civilians. Initially indifferent, Man-seob is deeply moved by the suffering of the people and decides to help Hinzpeter escape with his footage.
With the help of brave taxi drivers and locals, they evade capture and deliver the footage to the world. Hinzpeter’s report exposes the truth of the Gwangju Uprising, but Man-seob quietly returns to his ordinary life, never meeting Hinzpeter again.
